American Society for Microbiology - Microbiology Resource AnnouncementsNovel genetic information on Xylella fastidiosa from Spain. The draft genome of the first isolate recovered in the Island of Mallorca in 2016 from a cherry tree, has been reconstructed by a collaborative team of Spanish and Italian researchers in the framework of the project XF-ACTORS and with the support of the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the Ministry of Agriculture.

This is the first strain of the subspecies fastidiosa so far characterized in Europe. This is an important step toward unravelling important ecological and epidemiological questions: date and pathway of introduction and spread, host adaptation, genetic linkage with the strains of the subspecies fastidiosa causing Pierce’s disease and other diseases in North America and worldwide.
