Following the first detection of the quarantine plant pathogen Xylella fastidiosa in Europe in 2013, the European Union financed two major research projects, called “POnTE” and “XF-Actors”. Their goal was to expand the knowledge about Xylella fastidiosa in Europe through a multidisciplinary perspective.
The final conference of the XF-ACTORS’ project allows taking stock of 6 years of research. As far as the pathogen is concerned, on the opening day of the conference (Day 1), scientists worldwide will discuss the bacterium’s characteristics in general and the interactions of European strains with host plants.
The spittlebug Philaenus spumarius is the primary vector of Xylella fastidiosa infection in Europe. Scientists will explore findings on the insect’s life cycle to suggest low-impact population control solutions. That will be the main topic for discussion on the 2nd day of the conference (Day 2).On the same day, the participants will focus on the possible ways to counteract the bacterium in the plants preventing the development of severe diseases.
The XF-ACTORS meeting will close with a review of new ideas for improving early detection surveillance and monitoring (Day 3), the role of evidence-based decisions in the emergency of exotic pathogens of plants, as well as on the impact of the media and communication.
The 3rd EFSA European Conference on Xylella fastidiosa will follow on 29 and 30 April.
The e-poster session will be online on Twitter and Zenodo. Enjoy on @xf_actors and @Plants_EFSA
